People on Yorkshire Coast urged to think more about mental health
People on the Yorkshire Coast are being urged to think more about their mental health this week.
People on the Yorkshire Coast are being urged to think more about their mental health this week.
Many charities and organisations are arranging wellbeing activities for residents to take part in, with nature as this year's theme.
It is part of Mental Health Awareness Week which is being supported by Scarborough Survivors and North Yorkshire's Time to Change hub.
They will be hosting some nature-based activities in the town this week, working with local businesses, charities and community groups to engage adults aged 16 and over in building nature connections and sharing experiences of nature that help to manage mental wellbeing.
All of the events are free and take place from 2pm to 4pm.
Scarborough Survivors has outlined what is happening:
- Monday - Gardening to grow and nurture nature, to feel the soil when we sow and plant and notice nature around us as we garden
- Tuesday - Chair exercise is normally done indoors but can be enjoyed in a backdrop of trees and birdsong - thank you to Jeanette at Roots of Igradsil for providing this for free.
- Wednesday - Surfing is a great way to connect with nature as you work in tune with the waves and smell the salt and listen to the sounds the sea makes as it moves - thank you to Dexters Surf Shop for providing free lessons.
-Thursday - Bird watching is another way to really take time to look and listen. It is not about identifying the birds, but about noticing how they interact with their environment and how they have this knack of being heard and not seen. Thank you to Gemma Alexander for volunteering to help with this event.
- Friday and Saturdays events will be rescheduled.
- Sunday - On the last day of MHAW they will be asking people, in their own time, to notice three good things in nature - using one or more of their senses to tune in to nature.
Anyone who would like to join any of the events, get in touch with Scarborough Survivors or North Yorkshire Time to Change on their websites or social media or ring or text 07845 845895.
