People on the Yorkshire Coast are being encouraged by the Government to exercise to help reduce anxiety.

It is after NHS England research shows 75 percent of adults in England say they suffer with anxiety in everyday life.

Paul Sutherns, group leader at Run Scarborough, said: "Exercising is great for your mental health because for one you get outside, you're getting fresh air, you're releasing a lot of endorphins and letting off some steam. It's basically free to go for a run, all you need to do is step outside your front door. It doesn't matter if it's a 10 minute or 20 minute run, it's better than no run.

"As well as the running they're getting the social aspect to it as they're meeting new friends and meeting new people. They're cooped up indoors all the time so getting outside, doing something for themselves and then progressing with their fitness, you can see it quite quickly with running so they're building their confidence.

"All you need is a pair of trainers for running. Some people like to have a watch or phone so they can record and track progress but it isn't an expensive sport. We've found that a lot of people get into running, find they really enjoy fitness and then they progress to something else so maybe sign up to a gym, bootcamp or they'll take up cycling.

"It's not just running but the whole fitness thing is really good for your mental health because you can get outside, you meet new people, you build confidence, you start seeing changes in your body, form, your energy levels and that carries on into the rest of your life."
