A £1 million scheme to improve reliability and resilience of the electricity network in Scarborough has finished four months early.

Northern Powergrid is praising residents and businesses in the town for their co-operation and support.

Work on the programme started on 24 August 2020 and finished in mid-August, more than four months ahead of the scheduled completion date of the end of 2021. The work has focused on replacing 7km of high voltage underground electricity cables dating back to the 1960s with a more modern and sustainable alternative. These new cablesare capable of meeting any future increase in the demand for power supporting the growth and development of the town.

The work, carried out by O’Connor Utilities and Murphy Utilities on behalf of Northern Powergrid, has involved excavating in the roadway in a number of locations to the south side of the town centre including sections of Salisbury Street, Seamer Road, Oak Road, Falsgrave Road, Mount Park Road, Cambridge Place, Valley Road, Londesborough Road, All Saints Road, Westover Road, Belgrave Terrace, Westwood, Westbourne Grove, Princess Royal Terrace, Princess Royal Park, Fulford Road and Filey Road.

Mike Hammond, General Manager for Northern Powergrid’s North Yorkshire region said:

“Our engineering and contracting team cannot praise Scarborough residents, businesses and motorists enough for their support over the past eleven months, without which we could not have completed this job early.

“We’d like to say a huge thank you for everyone’s support as we’ve worked along the route and for the words of encouragement given to our team by members of the public as they have worked through rain, snow and freezing temperatures to get the job finished.

As part of its ongoing programme of supporting the communities it works in, Northern Powergrid has also provided funding for local charity The Rainbow Centre to buy new IT equipment for its recently reopened drop-in centre.

Mike Hammond added:

“As well as ensuring that communities are supported by having a safe, reliable and resilient power network, we also look to be a ‘force for good’ by working with local charities that share our values. The Rainbow Centre assists individuals experiencing homelessness, vulnerability or who are in crisis, so we’re very glad to have been able to assist them in the work they do.”

Trish Kinsella, Centre Manager at The Rainbow Centre said:

“We’ve been busier than ever during the pandemic and rely heavily on donations to support our work. With our drop-in sessions now taking place again, it’s great to be able to offer more people access to IT equipment to help with things like online training and job hunting. Many thanks to Northern Powergrid for providing the much-needed funding for this.”
