People in North Yorkshire are being urged to support local businesses this Christmas in a safe way.

The North Yorkshire Federation of Small Businesses say mask-wearing compliance among local retailers has been good.

Carolyn Frank from there said:

"They have implemented lots of measures to keep customers safe so they can welcome them into their premises such as one way systems, readily available hand sanitisers, limiting numbers in smaller premises. They want customers to feel safe and I think customers do from the feedback we're hearing.

"There's plenty of places to celebrate the festive season where you can be safe; whether it's indoors where retailers have put lots of precautions in place, or outdoors if you feel more comfortable with that, lots of businesses have really invested and developed their outdoor seating and outdoor facilities in really creative ways as well.

"Of course it's a really busy and important time of the year for retailers, and we'd really like to ask people to be patient and respectful of any requests that small business owners make of them when they're shopping. Business owners want to stay safe themselves and they want to keep their staff safe as well.

"At the local retailers that I've spoken to from the FSB since Tuesday have said that compliance levels are really good with only a handful of customers needing a reminder that mask-wearing is compulsory again so that's really great news to see customers complying."
