North Yorkshire travellers urged not to post selfies to avoid insurance issues
Community services say insurers may not pay out if a house is robbed
A North Yorkshire community service has urged people not to post pictures of themselves on holiday to avoid running into insurance issues.
The North Yorkshire Community Messaging service said that those who upload photos whilst on holiday could not be covered should their house become burgled.
In a release, the service - working together with North Yorkshire Police - explained that by posting photos on holiday, this advertises to criminals that homes are empty and the house is empty.
Due to this worry, many insurers have incorporated an exclusion to many home insurance plans that allows for a loophole to avoid paying compensation if the homeowner is seen posting photos online.
As well as this, they added that a "duty of care" will be added to the plan as a general condition that leaves advertisements such as announcements of holidays is the responsibility of the homeowner.
However, the service gave a number of ideas to reduce the likelihood of cover being revoked should the worst happen.
Among suggestions that the service gave was to wait until after the holiday to post photos, as it means homes can be kept secure.
As well as this, taking location services off apps and the phone itself help to reduce the risk of being burgled, as well as removing any personal details from social media profiles that are not needed.
They added that it is imperative to read the fine print of the current insurance policy of the home being insured. They added it is also a good idea to "contact your insurer to check for any clauses relating to posting on social media."
