It is hoped work to fix a dangerous building in Scarborough will start soon.

Since the end of last week, the area around 6 North Street has been cordoned off due to concerns about its structure.

It has been an issue for residents and businesses for a number of years.

Janet Jefferson, Scarborough Borough Councillor and North Yorkshire County Councillor for Castle ward, said:

"Well the situation with the property on North Street has been going on for a number of years and I was working with the previous family for a lot of years, and then the property was sold via auction and we hoped that work would be carried out but it took a long time.

"So since 2019 I've been working with North Yorkshire Building Control Partnership and the engineers at Scarborough Borough Council, and it all came to ahead at the latter part of last week when the deterioration of the property was liased and they took the decision to close the street.

"The owner is going put some new shoring up, which will reduce the barriers around it so hopefully the access to the other properties will be maintained and 6 North Street will get some renovation. There are plans in, as I understand, to rebuild the front of the property.

"I think visibly everybody was concerned about it, there were pieces that looked as if they could fall off but then over the last month or so, it's got even worse with cracks and more cracks appearing. The North Yorkshire Building Control liased with our engineer and they jointly decided that it was dangerous and that it should be all cordoned off.

"It was an eyesore for lots and lots of years. I think people were just concerned and people tried to buy it to renovate it and over the years it's just deteriorated and deteriorated, and nobody really knew what was being all the boarding up and I would get emails and phone calls."
