A new takeaway food project has been launched in Whitby to help those in need of meals.

'The People's Kitchen' has been set up inside Flowergate Hall Community Art Centre.

Food and meals will be provided on a pay-as-you-feel basis, or for free if you cannot afford to, like the 'Real Junk Food Project'.

The project in Whitby has been set up by Flash Company Arts Ltd CIC.

Rebecca Denniff, who is the Project Manager, said:

"Food is disposed of and thrown away from businesses when actually, it's still good to use. There are projects up and down the country that are making use of that food, turning it into delicious food that people can eat.

"We genuinely want anybody who wants to eat our food to be able to do it; and the pay-as-you-feel offer doesn't just go as far as you must make a donation, you can come and get some food and not donate at all.

"We decided that we needed to do that during this lockdown. We needed to make sure that we filled a gap that's been highlighted to us by the Whitby Food Alliance and the foodbank that there isn't a service in Whitby that's non-referral.

"In the first couple of weeks, Tuesdays and Wednesdays will be our takeaway day and we'll be open between 10am and 2pm. We'll be serving a little menu of hot chillis or soups and baked potatoes. We'll serve food until we run out.

"We opened our cafe after the first lockdown and we found actually people were coming to us who were in need. We've been massively supported by loads of little organisations in Whitby who are coming out of the woodworks.

"We've been approached by all sorts of people saying 'would you need this bit of food? Would you like that bit of food?' and then we've had people come to us and say how wonderful it is to be able to come and get some delicious food and not worry about how much they have to pay for it.

"What we're doing isn't offering a hand out to anybody, we're making sure nothing is going to waste. If you want to have some of our food, come and have it. If you know someone who you think would need some and can't get to us, we'll take them some food. We're determined to make a big difference in Whitby."
