There is going to be a new project to help the unemployed in Scarborough and Filey with their mental wellbeing.

Plans are underway to support those in need with that barrier as finding a job or pursuing a new career path can be difficult.

'Let's Get Set' is going to be based at Scarborough TEC with hopes for a six to seven week programme in the future.

It aims to work alongside local charities, community groups and businesses.

They believe that with wellbeing workshops, work experience, digital skills and personal development that an individual's mindset can change and a new chapter can begin.

It is going to be run by Bek Homer, a skills and employability trainer there, who said:

"It just aims to increase employment, skills and social enterprise into a community that might be facing local challenges. So Let's Get Set is going to be focussed on mental wellbeing and employability just for those harder to reach individuals in our community.

"We're covering Scarborough and Filey and we're just hoping to reach out to individuals, meet people who have maybe been out of work for a long time, or maybe not even worked, or who are interested in going into education or training but might have some barriers there that we hope the programme can help them overcome.

"What we want to do is really focus on the mental health side of these individuals. We think that the pandemic has had a massive impact on everybody and there might be some people that that's affected their confidence or desire to even enter into employment or training.

"We do think that by going the mental health route that might help people slowly and steadily kind of want to embrace different opportunities. So rather than solely focussing on unemployability, we want to do a more holistic looking at the mental wellbeing and then how that can help improve employability."

They say they are already beginning to collaborate with many local organisations.
