Hunmanby Railway Station is being dubbed the 'gateway' to the village.

It is after Northern Rail spent a lot of money to improve the platforms as it is keen on building links with the community.

Now, residents are trying to promote the village as a tourist destination.

Nick Harvey is from Friends of Hunmanby Railway Station and said:

"What we've done as a friends group is found different ways to work with the community so it means looking at more than just the flowers, we produce a timetable which is also an events guide to the village which lists all the events like plant fairs and bands that are on, so it better links to the community with the station and that's delivered free around everybody's house.

"People come to the station and regard the station now as a gateway because it's nice and it won a first prize at the community rail awards, it was the first time we had entered and that's another way of involving people, we have people who are disabled who do things like proof reading submissions, who are involved in trying to improve access to the station.

"It's a low use station to be realistic about 100 people a day probably use the station but it's an hourly service, so there's thousands of people a day who pass through Hunmanby and the flower display is quite a wow factor now, especially June and July and what we're trying to do is promote the village as a tourist destination. It's just like a good community atmosphere when you get here.

"At the station we've got timetable information and also information about the village so we've got a very good and well produced heritage trail guide and what we call a flower trail guide and both of those have maps of the village, so a person getting off the train here has a choice of two walks round the village looking at historic features and nice attractions.

"The business community was very much behind getting the Yorkshire Wolds cycle route moved through the village and to Hunmanby Gap when it was planned 10 years ago and that's really bearing fruit now because with the popularity of the Tour de Yorkshire, the Tour de France and also the growth in cycling, people now are regularly coming and staying in Hunmanby".
