Hotel owner in Scarborough admits apprehension ahead of regional tier confirmation
Tony Bates runs the hotel Ellenby on the Yorkshire coast
Sometime today we’ll find out what tier Scarborough will be in after the lockdown.
It ends on the 2nd of December - where a stricter tier system will be introduced.
Scarborough was in tier one before the lockdown.
Tougher measures could make it difficult for businesses in the hospitality sector.
Tony Bates, who runs the hotel Ellenby in the town, admits it'll be hard to run his business in tier 2;
"The debate will be whether to even bother opening the doors. Will people be coming here in the pandemic? If so, in what kind of numbers?
"Some of our pubs and restaurants haven't re-opened, which worries me. We'll be worse off if other hospitality businesses don't survive this"
Mr. Bates only took over the hotel five months back, and insists he's keen to overcome any adversity;
"Emotionally, me and my wife desperately want to open the doors. This is a new venture, we're incredibly excited, and we feel selfish really. We've got incredible sea views from where we are, and we want to share this.
"In order to do this, we've got to feel safe, the staff have got to feel safe, and the guests have got to feel safe.
"That's the dilemma faced by everyone in hospitality right now. In some ways, having no choice is easier."
