Free school uniform giveaway in Scarborough expected to be 'biggest yet'
It's being held tomorrow
Families in Scarborough are being offered free school uniform before the summer holidays are over.
Scarborough Uniform Recycle is holding another giveaway tomorrow (Sunday 27th August) at Westborough Methodist Church from 4pm to 6pm and everyone is welcome.
Organisers there are expecting this one to be the biggest after the last one in July saw a huge turnout.
Tom Clayton helps out there and said: "We had around 85 families come which is easily around 200 children. We think around a quarter of a ton of clothes went that day but we go again. It's the end of the summer and people are more settled in terms of which school they're going to and of course, they've had a summer holiday which isn't cheap at the best of times.
"We've got lots of 'general uniforms' like shirts, trousers, dresses, skirts and all that kind of thing. We have a pretty reasonable stock of primary school uniforms for most places but it's our secondary school uniforms that we're short of. We've had loads of donations over the summer which is amazing.
"We have some people that are referred to us through various groups and organisations but there are a range of families. For some people, it's not so much a financial thing, it's a moral thing. They don't want to buy new clothes because they want to recycle them and it's better for the environment that that happens.
"We have several schools that donate their lost property to us at the end of a term or certainly at the end of the year. The law changed around a year ago where schools are supposed to make uniforms more affordable and not have so many badges on things.
"We are seeing changes and I know a couple of the secondary schools in the area are changing some of their PE kits and their skirts are going from the tartan to a plain skirt, which is a lot easier because you can buy it off the shelf instead of having to pay three times the price. If you've got two or three children then the cost can be huge for people."
