A new free walking trail for children under 5 years-old in Scarborough is being launched tomorrow.

It will be about Hairy Bob's story and the smuggling heritage of the town.

The aim is to help the children with their development and get them ready for when they start school.

It will start at St. Mary's Church on Castle Road from 10am until 2pm tomorrow (Friday 9th July).

It is being organised by Coast and Vale Community Action and Jo Laking, the school readiness practitioner, said:

"It's going to be a lovely magical day. The story trail starts at St. Mary's Church yard and it meanders around Royal Albert Park and then it ends up at Hairy Bob's cave.

"At the beginning of the trail, we have activities for the children to get involved in; there's some craft activities so the children can make pirate hats, swords, or a parrot and they can wear these and we'll be having some games as well.

"The point of the story trail is help children with their speech and language development. During lockdown children haven't been able to get out, integrate and mix with other children so they've missed out on that important part of their development.

"We're hoping with the children coming on the story trail will be to get out in the fresh air, they'll look around their environment, see new things, talk about what they can see and there's a lovely booklet that comes along with the story trail with lots of activities in for the children to get involved with.

"The booklets themselves are available for families to come and collect from our offices at The Street on Lower Clark Street and these booklets will be available all summer, so families can access the trail whenever they want. It's up to them and I'd like to stress that this is all completely free."
