Ninth anniversary of Foodbank4Whitby
It's looking back at all the years it's received donations
Foodbank4Whitby has been describing some of its most unusual donations as part of its ninth anniversary.
It has been helping people who are in need in the town as well as offering assistance in any way that they can.
It is looking back at all the years it has received items.
Treasurer, Chris Taylor, said: "Early days we had some sailors who were abandoned by their Captain in Whitby. He'd just sailed off into the blue and left them behind. We had a family of campers who had a big row and one of the partners drove off into the distance and left these campers in the field miles from home.
"There was a restaurant that was closing down and they gave me a block of frozen fish. It was about 10 kilos. We were working with the sisters at Sneaton Castle and we asked them if we could turn them into about 20 or 30 fish pies. They willing did that and then we froze them and gave them out.
"There were turkeys at Christmas and you can imagine a 20 kilo turkey or whatever they are, they're a little bit big really so we turned those into sliced turkey, froze it and gave those out. I think the weirdest was little jellies that came from Malaysia in a big jar. I thought they were alright but could we find anyone to eat them? No.
"We regularly get given things that aren't food like prom dresses, which was perhaps the most bizarre one that we were offered, but we managed to find homes for them. Not this Christmas but the previous one, a chap rang up and said he had toys for us and would we help give them out. He turned up in a minibus filled to the brim with brand new toys."
