North Yorkshire Police have placed a dispersal notice in Selby.

It follows several reports recently of anti social behaviour in and around the town centre and mainly involving the throwing of fireworks.

The notice has been issued in the town as officers look to clamp down before Halloween and Bonfire Night. It's live now and will remain in place until 8pm tomorrow evening (Thursday 24th October).

The order allows police to disperse anyone engaging in anti-social behaviour and reduce the likelihood of the public being harassed, alarmed, distressed or the occurrence of crime and disorder taking place in the area.

Failing to comply with an order is a criminal offence and officers can return anyone under the age of 16 to their home address. Anyone found breaching a notice is liable to be arrested and face further action.

It comes after numerous reports last night of young people throwing eggs and stones at members of the public and vehicles.

It is illegal for anyone under 18 to purchase and possess adult fireworks in a public place.

Sergeant Lauren McGillivray from the Selby Neighbourhood Policing team said:

“This type of behaviour will not be tolerated in Selby and North Yorkshire as it causes distress and alarm to members of the public.

“ The safety of the local community is our priority and any incidents reported will be taken seriously.

“ We will be increasing patrols and officers will be utilising the additional powers from the dispersal notice when appropriate.”
