Neighbouring residents have expressed concerns about plans to turn a vacant bookmakers in Scarborough into a wine bar.

J N Corner Property Ltd has applied for planning permission and premises licence to open Ont Corner in the former William Hill unit at 1-5 Falsgrave Road.

The new bar would be open seven days a week from 10am until midnight with five picnic benches placed outside the property to be used for patrons and smokers.

The premises licence is currently awaiting a decision from Scarborough Council while a planning application for a change of use for the property is out to consultation.

Nine people have now objected to the planning application, with many of them worried about the impact of adding another drinking establishment onto Falsgrave Road.

One objector wrote:

“This is a residential area with a lot of families and elderly people.

“We are already subject to regular noise and anti-social behaviour from groups of intoxicated people leaving the bars on Falsgrave, of which there are already eight, with planning passed for a ninth.

“This is more than adequate for one small stretch of road and the additional noise from yet another will only add to the constant problems.”

The owner of a nearby hairdressers and flat has also objected saying that there will be noise disturbance if the bar is given the go-ahead.

Neither North Yorkshire County Council Highways or North Yorkshire Police have opposed the plan, though the police has asked for clarification on operating hours which differ between the premises application and the planning application.

The applicant says that the wine bar will serve food that does not require cooking, such cheese boards, cold tapas, olives, cakes and other sweet treats.

The planning application remains out to consultation.
