It's as people will be visiting this bank holiday weekend

As the long bank holiday begins for many on the Yorkshire Coast there are warnings for people to stay safe.

The Coastguard says they are on standby as anything can happen on cliffs, in the sea and on beaches.

Fran Wilkins, Senior Coastal Operations Officer from Whitby to Bridlington, said: "People need to think about the sort of potential hazards of the beach and the area they're going on; simple safety messages like check the tide times if you're going on the beach, keep an eye on where your children are, establish a point to meet them if they're going off and sort of playing separately, don't walk on the edge of cliffs which can be prone to crumbling and keep your dogs on a lead.

"Anything can happen on the beach, the same as anywhere else. Accidents happen and we're there to help people in those circumstances. We're just really looking to get people to have a plan and understand if they get to the beach and the tide's coming in, it's probably not best to set off on a three-mile walk but to stay local to where you are.

"If you are in difficulty on the beach or on the cliffs then call 999 and ask for the Coastguard and we'll get the appropriate help to you as quickly as we can. It's just really about embedding that message in the public as we see more and more people come to the coastline on staycations and to enjoy the nice weather.

"Each day and each week can be different and I think if we can expect to be busy and if we're not then that's great because if we're not out it means no-one's in trouble, which is exactly what we want. The volunteer teams are on call along with our partners in the RNLI or the other emergency services. We're all ready if we are needed and we'd like to be not needed as much as possible."
