A Yorkshire care group has praised its local GP surgery for the way it handled the first batch of Covid-19 vaccinations for its older and vulnerable residents.

Saint Cecilia’s Care Group says the team at Pickering Medical Practice were exemplary in the way they took care of the vaccination of staff and residents from Alba Rose Care Home in the town.

Now the majority of the home’s residents and staff have had the first injection against the coronavirus.

Managing Director Mike Padgham said: “Dr Coppack and his team at the surgery were absolutely marvellous with our residents and staff and we could not have asked for more.

“They were extremely kind, patient and understanding with our residents and were a credit to their profession.

“It can’t be easy to be setting out on a huge vaccination programme and the pressure must be great, but the care they took over our residents and staff was exemplary, and we cannot thank them enough.

“I also pay tribute to the local clinical commissioning groups for North Yorkshire and the Vale of York for the efforts they are making in getting the vaccine out.”

Only the residents able to travel in the home’s minibus at a social distance were able to get to the surgery to have the vaccination. Mr Padgham said he hoped a way would soon be found to get the vaccine safely to all care staff and into other care and nursing homes so that the rest of the residents across the county could have it.

“That is the remaining challenge for the Government is it is not currently easy to transport the vaccine into care settings,” he added. “Together we have to find a way to overcome that challenge.”
