There are calls for charities helping local families go through cancer treatment to have more awareness raised for them.

It's Child Cancer Awareness Month, with support being highlighted even more due to the pandemic.

The Gallimore family are from York - son George was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2013 at the age of just two and a half.

Dad Mark Gallimore says the respite support from charity Candlelighters was crucial to helping them get through the treatment: "2013 started a whirlwind of events for us.

"We were rushed to Leeds General Infirmary and we hadn't heard of Candlelighters, but right from the start they supported our entire family. Their help was amazing during the three and a half years and beyond of George's treatment.

"Since then we've just been trying to give back as much as we can to them. They make it so much easier; you can't imagine what it's like without them being there.

"They provide entertainment and respite for the parents; they give each family a holiday once a year to have those precious moments together; grants to help you with travelling; adventures for the siblings.

"They even put on tea parties for grandparents and silly things like that that you take for granted, but mean so much when you're stuck in isolation.

"We finished treatment in 2016 and I could not imagine what it would've been like for families going through it in the last two years. The help during these tough times is so important.

"Shouting out for people supporting families is key during Covid times especially".

Mark is aiming to walk and run 2,000 miles to raise awareness of child cancer and to raise money for Candlelighters.

"I did my first ever marathon in 2014 and as I've gone on I've become addicted to running; it's combining running with trying to bring awareness and much needed funds to Candelighters.

"My main goal is to hit 2,000 miles - I'm currently on 1,250 miles at the moment! I always say the blisters, sore feet and aching muscles are nothing compared to what the kids on the wards go through.

"Having friends, family and strangers joining us is brilliant. George himself is starting to do little runs and things like that, so it really does mean a lot. This year I'm confident we'll hit the £38,000 mark since starting fundraising in 2014.

"We're very proud when we remember the darkest moments that George went through; to see him running the Elvington 10k not long ago it's brilliant. It's an inspiration to us".
