A charity which protects seals on the Yorkshire Coast is repeating its safety message.

British Divers' Marine Life Rescue says if you see one on the beach or rocks you should leave it alone and put dogs on leads.

It is after reports of several rescues recently including in Whitby.

David Leng is from there and said: "Keep your distance. Keep dogs away if there are any in the area because these seals do carry nasty viruses and infections. If you, or your dog, gets bitten by one they can pass on the infection which can be quite nasty.

"Seals are wild and you don't know when they're going to come ashore. They come onto the beach to have a rest and have a sleep and because of their coat they're very hard to see on the beach. If you do come across them, or your dog finds one, get your dog on a lead as soon as possible and keep your distance.

"If you think it's injured or if you think somebody needs to check it out, give us a call. We're a 24/7 charity and once you've spoken to them, they'll send someone out to give the seals a check.

"For each seal that we pick up that needs veterinary attention or a veterinary check, this bill can be anything from £70 to £300 per seal. So in Yorkshire this week, we've already picked up four seals so it soon adds up."

The charity has got a fundraising stall at Whitby's Traction Engine Rally this weekend and says it is always looking for volunteers too.
