There is going to be a big party in Scarborough today in support of Ukraine.

The celebration will be attended by Ukrainian refugees, hosts and sponsors from across North Yorkshire.

It is to mark Independence Day which happened earlier this week at the war-torn country.

Organiser, Iain Butterworth, said: "It's obviously very relevant to mark the occasion and over the last few weeks the Ukrainian guests have been contacting the appeal saying it would be nice to mark the occasion, so we're throwing a big party which seems to be getting bigger and bigger.

"We started with a few people from the area wanting to come along, guests and sponsors, but I think currently we have guests alone about 50 from Scarborough, Whitby, Goathland, Robin Hood's Bay and Malton. We seem to have gotten this out to a lot of people and there's been a lot of interest.

"We've got a really nice community going on now and people living in and around Scarborough have been meeting with guests and sponsors further North so this community is coming together really well. It's no surprise that everyone wants to come together and celebrate it. There's been a huge amount of support.

"There's going to be some speeches, flag raising, there's going to be a special sort of video presentation where a number of guests have put together photos and videos of their towns and cities when they were in Ukraine and that's going to be shown with a bit of an explanation."
