A politics professor from a University in Norfolk is telling us the new leader of the opposition needs to quickly stamp down their authority and lead more effective scrutiny of the Autumn Budget

Kemi Badenoch was elected the new leader of the Conservative party by it's members today, after the contest to replace Rishi Sunak started in late July

The contest to decide who would succeed Rishi Sunak started on July 24. After the Party suffered their worst electoral defeat in it's history at the General Election.

She will face Sir Keir Starmer at Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday (6th November), in the House of Commons.

"They also need to appeal to more mainstream voters"

Professor Alan Finlayson is from the University of East Anglia:

"They have got to manage their party and unite the different factions, while also appealing to voters who moved away from the party to Reform.

"All this won't be enough to win them an election, they also need to appeal to more 'mainstream voters' like those who voted Labour or Lib Dem and bring them back into the fold.

"I think we're going to see them taking firm stance on issues that Conservative voters are comfortable with, such as immigration.

"They also going to have to do that while also reaching out to those who are concerned by the economy".
