Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade are urging people to stay safe along the coast and whilst near open water.
It is after their Rescue Team attended 18 callouts – a May monthly record for the team and exceeding the previous high of 16 calls in May 2009.
Heather Peacock is a rescue team member and tells us about the main reason people get into difficulty: "People can sometimes get blown off shore in inflatables.
"They can get caught in rips and get pulled out to sea.
"They can get stuck on cliffs and rocks, so I think the thing is to be aware of your surroundings and the weather conditions.
"Be prepared with what you're wearing, be prepared for the weather and be aware of your own capabilities and limitations as well."
