We are being reminded to allow extra time for journeys on the A1 around the Angel of the North this week - after highways workers found a 4 metre deep void near the Junction 65 exit slip road.

There has been frustration from people travelling around the area over the last few weeks, with many drivers reporting delays to their journeys.

One lane is still closed during the day between junctions 66 (Eighton Lodge) and 65 (Birtley) for the safety of drivers after the discovery of a four-metre-deep cavity near the junction 65 exit slip. It is expected to remain closed throughout the week.

The junction 65 southbound exit slip is also closed, meaning there will still be no access to the A1231 from the A1 southbound. Non-motorway traffic is being diverted to leave the A1 at junction 66.

Overnight full closures have been in place on the southbound carriageway since last week following the discovery of issues with mine workings in the area.

National Highways say the closures are to enable further investigation and repairs.

Further full closures are scheduled on the A1 southbound between junctions 68 (Lobley Hill) and 65 tonight (Wednesday) and Thursday.

Traffic will be diverted away from the A1 at junction 69. Overnight closures are scheduled between 8pm and 6am the next day.

Drivers are encouraged to plan alternative routes if possible.
