Domestic Abuse is the biggest reason for homelessness in Gateshead
This comes from a council report into the issue in the town
Domestic abuse remains the largest reason for homelessness, says a Gateshead Council report.
According to Gateshead Council figures, 313 people were made homeless in the area as a result of domestic abuse between 2023 and 2024. This is followed by 246 cases of family no longer willing or able to accommodate a person and 255 cases of the end of a private rental tenancy.
Official local authority statistics have tracked a decline in domestic abuse-related homelessness from 2021/22 with 399 cases and 2022/23 with 270 cases.
The report reads: “Although the volumes of cases where domestic abuse was identified as the reason for loss of settled home is falling year on year, in 23/24 domestic abuse remains the largest reason for homelessness in Gateshead.”
The number of approaches to the council’s housing solutions service for homelessness “remains extremely high” with 3,304 in 2023/24, a slight decrease from 2022/23 with 3,345.
Since 2021/22 Gateshead Council has also seen a year-on-year increase on the number of placements for temporary accommodation, including council facilities, bed and breakfasts and other council-paid shelter. From 2022/23 to the most recent figures, there was a 21% increase in temporary bookings, rising from 891 to 1,075.
According to Gateshead Council’s domestic abuse support, if you, or someone you know, are in immediate danger, call 999 and ask for the police. In cases where it is not safe to speak to the police, callers can use the ‘silent solution’ and press 55 when prompted. Some pharmacies also advertise an ‘Ask for ANI’ sign, meaning they can provide a private space, a phone and ask if police or local service support is required.
The council also maintains a 24-hour domestic abuse helpline on 0191 433 3333.
