Northumbria Police have launched an appeal for information and witnesses following a fatal crash on the A1(M).

Officers from the force have said that the incident took place just north of Haggerston shortly after 3:05 p.m. on Friday afternoon (May 31st).

The incident involved a Citroën C3 Picasso and a VW Transporter, with the Citroën heading northbound.

As the car was making its way north, it then crashed into the Volkswagen that had been travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the Citroën, who was later determined to be a man aged 68, and a 26-year-old female passenger, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Both people's next of kin have been informed of their death and their families are being supported by specialist officers.

Enquiries are now taking place as investigators look into the events leading up to the collision.

Now, officers are looking to the public to provide potentially crucial information for their case, appealing for information and witnesses who saw the incident.

Anyone who witnessed the collision as it happened or was around the area at the time of the crash is being asked to get in touch as soon as possible.

In particular, those who have dashcam footage of their journey along the A1(M) close to the Scottish border is being urged to reach out.

Those who may have any information can contact Northumbria Police by using the Report tool on their website or by dialling 101 and quoting incident reference number NP-20240531-0645.
