United Utilities are apologising for any inconvenience - after a water mains burst on a busy high street in Wigan.

The mains water leak means Elliott Street in Tyldesley is expected to stay closed all weekend, and a diversion is in place.

United Utilities have released this statement:

“A water burst on Elliot Street in Tyldsley has caused damage to the road. A diversion is in place while we work to repair it.

“Our apologies to motorists for any delays this weekend. We’ll get the road reopen as quickly as possible.”

Meanwhile, Wigan council said:

“We understand there has been delays as a consequence of the temporary closure of Elliot Street.

United Utilities are managing the diversion and are working with the council and the police to ensure it is working correctly.

The closure has been put in place so repairs can make the road safe and prevent a longer closure in future.

The diversion is down Hough Lane, along Manchester Road, then up Prince’s Avenue, and Astley Street to re-join Elliot Street beyond the area affected.

The estimated closure is for two days. Thank you for your patience.”
