Warning of possible road disruption because of snow and ice in the North West

People travelling in the north west are being warned of possible travel disruption tomorrow, with snow and ice set to hit the region.

A yellow weather warning comes in place from midnight tonight. It covers the whole of the North West, as well as parts of the Midlands, Yorkshire and Scotland.

Highways North West are urging drivers to give extra time for their journeys, and also to plan ahead, amid fears that snow blizzards could cause blockages on motorways.

In a post on X, they said: "SNOW North West. Road users in the North West of England are being advised to check the weather forecast and road conditions before travelling between 0300 & midnight on Tuesday the 16th January as widespread snow is forecast."

The Met Office say they expect weather to get worse throughout the early hours of the morning, with "snow showers, perhaps merging into a longer spell of snow" likelt to cause disruption

Met Office meteorologist Liam Eslick said that temperatures will be about 5C to 6C lower than usual for this time of year.

Mr Eslick said: "Especially towards the North where we do have these warnings, we're likely to see some travel disruption.

"So we would recommend people stick to the main roads and avoid country lanes where possible.

"These are the places that aren't going to see any gritting or any road clearances for the next couple of days.

"So we recommend people take their time, make sure they have time to do their cars in the mornings, and go steady."
