UPDATE: A THIRD Sinkhole Has Appeared In Salford

Published 3rd Sep 2015

Greater Manchester seems to be sinking - as a THIRD hole has opened up - this time in Salford.

It's on Newearth Road - between Walkden and Worsley which is surrounded by houses.

The hole itself has been created by workers, after they noticed that the road had started to dip.

When they broke the surface, they discovered about 16ft of road had collapsed underneath.

A spokesman for Salford City Council said:

“Engineers from Urban Vision spotted a depression in the road as part of routine inspections. They closed the road to investigate before it could collapse.

“On opening up the road they found that subsoil had been washed away. There is a culvert which is five metres (16ft) beneath the road and engineers may need to open a hole up to 20m long (65ft) and four metres wide (13ft) to fully investigate the cause and extent of the sub-soil collapse.

“Engineers are on site now and traffic is moving freely and being managed by temporary traffic lights. Any future work on the road will be planned to cause as little disruption as possible to road users.

“The hole is on the B532 Newearth Road towards Walkden, between Queensway and Shawbrook Avenue.”

It follows the 40ft crater on Mancunian way - and a second unrelated hole metres away from it on Paddock Street yesterday.
