UK Flights To Sharm el-Sheikh Suspended

Published 5th Nov 2015

20-thousand British holidaymakers are stranded in Sharm el-Sheikh following the decision to suspend all flights from the UK indefinitely.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The decision was made in response to fears that a bomb brought down the plane which crashed over the Sinai desert last weekend.

EasyJet, Thomson, Thomas Cook and British Airways have cancelled all services to the resort with the last flight to Manchester leaving last night.

A spokesperson from Manchester Airport has said: “Due to on going issues and UK Government advice, flights to Sharm el Sheikh are currently suspended. Any passengers with queries or concerns should contact their airline directly.”

Foreign secretary Philip Hammond has explained that British authorities are currently working with their Egyption counterparts to introduce new safety measures to bring British tourists back to the UK.

Mr Hammond said: “These are special additional measures, not necessarily something that we could do on a sustainable basis but something that we will put in as a short term special measure to get back home the people who are there now.”

Authorities on the ground will “only allow those planes to take off when they are absolutely confident that the measures they have designed have been fully implemented and we can absolutely assure the safety of those aircraft”.

19 flights were due to leave the UK today and would have brought holidaymakers home but despite these being cancelled, Mr Hammond said airlines expect to bring people back to the UK from tomorrow.
