Two men dead in South Manchester crash

Fatal crash kills two leaves three in hospital.

Two men have been killed and another three are in hospital following a crash on Wilbraham Road in the early hours of this morning. It was around 3:15am that police observed a white Audi A5 driving at high speed on Wilbraham Road. A short time later, the Audi collided with two parked cars and street furniture on Wilbraham Road, close to Whalley Range High School for girls. Two men were sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Three other men suffered serious injuries and have been taken to hospital for treatment. There are expected to be a number of significant road closures in place for some time this morning. The Greater Manchester Police Professional Standards Branch has been informed and an automatic referral has been made to the Independent Police Complaints Commission. Superintendent Jim Liggett said: “This morning a white Audi A5 collided with two parked cars and street furniture and two men have sadly died.

“We are in the process of informing their families, to whom we will be providing support from specially trained officers and offering our sincere condolences. “We are investigating the circumstances leading up to the collision, although our enquiries are still at an early stage and we will also be providing support to everyone involved in this tragic incident.

“Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit remain at the scene conducting enquiries and the road is likely to remain closed for some time. “The GMP Professional Standards Branch has been informed and an automatic referral has been made to the IPCC in line with standard policy.” Anybody with information should contact police on 101, quoting incident number 171 of 27/04/16, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
