Tributes pour in for former GMP officer found dead

A former Greater Manchester police officer who was first on the scene when his two colleagues were murdered by Dale Cregan has been found dead in a park.

The body of Andrew Summerscales was discovered in Stalybridge yesterday.

Tributes have been flooding in for the 46-year-old who was said to have been badly affected by the deaths of Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes.

In a statement GMP said:

Greater Manchester Police would like to extend sincere condolences to family of the former officer who was found dead yesterday.

At around 7:20am on Tuesday 30 August 2016 police were called to reports that the body of a man had been found in Cheetham Park, Stalybridge.

Officers attended and found the body of 46-year-old former GMP officer Andrew Summerscales.

There are believed to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding Andrew’s death and a file has been prepared for the coroner.

Deputy Chief Constable Ian Pilling said: “It is with great sadness that I can confirm we received the tragic news that former GMP officer Andrew Summerscales passed away yesterday.

“Andrew left GMP from the Tameside division in November 2015 after 15 years of service and I know that many of his former colleagues hold very fond memories of him.

“On behalf of Greater Manchester Police I wish to pass on my most sincere condolences to Andrew’s family, friends and colleagues during this extremely difficult time.”
