Part of Oldham town centre has been shut whilst a bomb squad investigates reports of a suspicious package.

Police were called to Bow Street just before 11am - and explosive ordnance disposal experts are examining what's been found using specialist equipment and a small robot.

It's shutting off a small back street near the town centre and affecting a number of car parks.

Some residents have been evacuated as a precaution - and there's around 6 mini cordons in place.

A statement from Greater Manchester Police reads:

"Shortly before 11am today (Wednesday 6 February 2019) police were called to reports of a suspicious package on Bow Street in Oldham.

An assessment is currently being made and EOD are attending the scene.

Some residents have been evacuated as a precaution.

A safety cordon is in place on Bow Street.

At this stage the disruption caused is believed to be minimal."
