Storm Jonas Heads to Manchester

Manchester has been warned to prepare for major flooding and downpours as a killer blizzard heads to the UK.

Storm Jonas killed at least ten people in America and left up to 60cm of snow in major states included New York and Washington DC.

The aftermath of the snowstorm is set to hit the North West of England on Tuesday.

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for North-West England for rain and flooding.

A Met spokesman said: “An active cold front is expected to become slow-moving across North-West England through Tuesday, and into Wednesday, before clearing to the south on Wednesday afternoon.

“Warm air of tropical origins is expected to be entrained into the system, leading to abundant moisture and heavy rain.

“North-West England could see up to 150-200 mm of rain.

“As such, there is the potential for river flooding, and also standing water on roads. Strong and gusty south-west winds will also develop.”

A state of emergency was declared with individual states in near-shutdown after thousands of flights were cancelled, schools and government offices closed and sports and entertainment events called off.

It is thought thousands of homes lost power on Saturday.
