Stockport Plaza celebrates its 90th birthday today, having survived the threat of demolition and World War II.

From opening on October 7th 1932, the well-loved Art Deco venue has remained loved by many, sporting a cinema, stage, café and gallery.

The Plaza also has an international reputation- notably being the last remaining Super Cinema and Variety Theatre still trading in her original capacity.

It has a rich community history, having been saved from demolition 20 years ago by a campaign from local residents.

The Plaza also played a role in the World War II, where it was reportedly one of the safest places for locals to be during an air raid.

The Plaza are hosting a variety of events this week to celebrate their birthday including welcoming Robert Powell and Liza Goddard to present their show 'Silver Screen' - a tribute to the first 100 years of cinema.

Film 'Save the Cinema' is also being shown this weekend - a story of a picture house like The Plaza which was saved by its local community.

There is also a celebration of 'The Mighty Compton Organ', which was installed and played on the Plaza's opening day 90 years ago this week.

Later on this year, Greater Manchester residents can also look forward to the return of the Plaza's yearly pantomime- which has been announced as Cinderella.

Here at Hits Radio we took a look at what to expect for the cast's Christmas run.
