REVEALED: DIY cosmetic surgery on the rise, as doctors call for a 'register' of trained professionals to be introduced
At the moment, anyone can buy lip fillers online and are then able to inject it themselves
All you have to do is type 'lip fillers' into Google and one of the first options is to purchase fillers and needles.
Currently, there is no legislation stopping the sale and injection of lip fillers without a licence.
Anyone can buy, and inject them.
The rules are different for botox, where a 'prescriber' (usually a doctor, dentist or prescribing nurse) has to check over a patient before a trained professional then injects them.
Even then, though, there are problems with the system, with reports of prescribers only checking on a client for a matter of seconds, before allowing them to be injected but not staying to check on them.
Hits Radio have been speaking to people who've suffered because of untrained beauticians.
Laura Alicia told us:
"My lips were the size of two massive balloons on my face. It was crazy, they just kept getting bigger and bigger. In the morning, when I woke up, they were touching my nostrils.
"You couldn't actually feel any lip, it was just like concrete. I tried to track the clinic down and the mobile and landline number had both been disconnected. It turned out the lady who had injected me hadn't been qualified."
Doctors and nurses are backing calls for stricter legislation, with the sale of fillers being regulated and only available on a prescription basis.
There are also suggestion of a 'register' of people trained to inject, where any issues with quality or reactions are then referred to a regulator.
Maria Patricia runs a clinic in Ashton:
"This is what most doctors and prescribing nurses are calling for, because when it does go wrong, it can go seriously wrong.
"Don't just look on Facebook or social media and think 'that's really good' because you may get a lot worse than a cheap deal because if things do go wrong, you don't have anywhere to go.
"The potential of what you can do with filler is horrendous, it needs to be prescribing drug that only prescribers are able to dispense it, really."
