Prison Report's Concerns

A new report of HMP Manchester has found that the number of suicides in the prison ‘remains high’ and there’s been an increase in the number of prisoners that feel ‘unsafe.’

The findings were released after an unannounced inspection of the prison that also found too many prisoners were doubled up in cells made for one man.

Despite the findings there were some positive notes as the prison’s health care was said to be ‘generally good’ while relationships between staff and prisoners was also praised.

Michael Spurr, Chief Executive Officer of the National Offender Management Service, said

“I am pleased that the Chief Inspector has identified HMP Manchester as one of the best inner city prisons they have inspected. It holds a challenging population and provides a positive regime promoting purposeful activity and a strong work ethic.

"The report identifies areas where further improvement is required and the Governor and her staff will use the report's recommendations to address these over the next 12 months."
