Published 29th Sep 2015

Police are trying to trace 2 people who tried to save a man from a burning block of flats in Stretford**.**

A 71 year old man died in the blaze, and investigations are still underway into how it started.

Investigations have so far uncovered that when the fire at Wellington House on Sandy Lane was first discovered at around 4pm on Saturday the 19th - a number of people ran into the building to help get residents out.

Two people in particular ran further inside and went up the stairs to the floor where the fire was raging to try and help a man who was trapped in one of the flats. Despite their best efforts, including trying to force the door using a fire extinguisher, the flames and the smoke were too much and they couldn’t get him out.

Police are now appealing for them to come forward and assist with enquiries.

The first person is described as an Asian man, approximately 20-25-years old, between 5ft 6in and 5ft 7in tall of large build and unshaven.

He was wearing a blue polo shirt with red trim on the collar, dark blue trousers/jeans and blue trainers with white laces and soles. He was also wearing a distinctive blue bandana with large white spots/motifs on his head.

The second person is described as a white woman, approximately 20-25-years-old, 5ft 6in tall of medium with long brown tied up hair.

She was wearing a bright red/pink sleeveless top with a black pattern on the front and a low neckline, black leggings and white trainers. She was carrying a large tan coloured shoulder bag.

Detective Sergeant Andy Darnton said:

“We would like to appeal for these people to come forward not only to assist with our enquiries but also to thank them for their heroic actions.

“If you recognise the description as somebody you know or even as yourself then please come forward and contact the police.

“I would also like to pay tribute to each spirited member of the public who ran into the house in an attempt to evacuate everybody. A lot of people were saved that day due to their actions.

“Tragically one man didn’t make it out and we have got specially trained officers providing support to his family to assist with any needs they may have.”
