Police launch murder investigation over body found in tent

A homeless man found in a burning tent under a railway arch was beaten to death, police said.

Daniel Smith, 23, who had been rough sleeping for a number of years in

Manchester, may have been alive when his tent was torched.

He had suffered multiple injuries to his head and body.

Launching a murder inquiry, Chief Supt Mary Doyle, from Greater Manchester Police, said: “This is a tragic situation and we are working with other agencies to assist the local community.

“We are determined to find out who is responsible and bring them to justice.''

Mr Smith, from the Ashton-under-Lyne area near Manchester, was found at around 1.20am on Wednesday after police and fire services were called to the blaze on Irwell Street in Ordsall, Salford.
