The safety on one of Manchester's main routes is being questioned after a spate of accidents.

There have been over 80 incidents on Princess Road in the last three years.

Only last month a 57-year-old woman was killed as she walked home from work in West Didsbury.

Councillors have held meetings with highways officers and residents who have raised concerns about safety on the road.

As a result a recommendation's being made to reduce the speed limit along the entire stretch to 30mph - at the moment it varies between 30 and 40.

Cllr Kate Chappell, Manchester City Council's executive member for the environment, said: "Princess Road has sadly recently been the site of two fatal accidents. Councillors and highways officers have met residents on a number of occasions and we are aware that they are growing increasingly concerned about safety on the road. Like them, we are treating this as an urgent priority. "We are recommending that the speed limit along the entire stretch of Princess Parkway be reduced to 30mph, replacing the current situation in which the speed limit varies between 30 and 40mph in different locations. This will send a clear message to motorists that they are passing through an area where people live, work and take their children to school, and that they need to drive appropriately. It will also reinforce the message that people who drive at high speeds causing a danger to others will be prosecuted, and along with other measures being proposed, we believe this will improve safety along this route."
