New Year Message From Greater Manchester Mayor
New Year message from Greater Manchester’s Mayor
As Greater Manchester prepares to ring in 2016, Mayor Tony Lloyd said:
“New Year is a time when we reflect on the past and look forward to the future.
“Our thoughts go from the local to the global as we recognise the plight of people whose homes have been devastated by flooding here in Greater Manchester, to those fleeing wars and violence in places such as Syria.
“But in the midst of these dreadful events, fundamental human decency shines through. Here in Greater Manchester we have once again seen the real community spirit that makes this place so special. From the family in Lower Broughton who opened up their burger van to provide free meals with food provided by local people, to the group of Syrian refugees who have been building flood defences in Rochdale so they could – in their own words – give something back, we have seen and heard inspirational stories that can make us all proud to be part of Greater Manchester.
“This kind of humanity is seen not just in Greater Manchester but across the world and represents a good basis to start 2016 with hope.”
