Nearly 150 arrests for drink and drug driving in Greater Manchester
Officers are patrolling round the clock
149 people have been arrested for drink and drug driving across Greater Manchester during the first half of December, as part of GMP’s ‘None for the Road’ Christmas crackdown.
The first sixteen days of the operation saw officers across the force carry out 463 breath tests, resulting in 149 arrests - almost a third of drivers stopped returned a positive test or refused/failed the test.
17 people tested positive for drink or drugs following a collision, while 132 were caught by officers carrying out breath tests at drink and drug drive check sites or while out on patrol
Launched on Friday 1 December, the month long campaign will continue to run throughout the festive period to highlight the devastating consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Chief Inspector Tariq Butt, who leads GMP’s Traffic Unit said: “When you consider these figures only cover the first half of December they make quite shocking reading. There are still far too many people willing to risk their life and the lives of others for the sake of a drink.
“The point of this operation is to save lives and prevent serious injuries and we will continue to target drivers we suspect may be driving under the influence of drink or drugs, during this peak time.
“The message is clear, never drive under the influence of drink or drugs – always make it none for the road.”
The operation will see officers continue to patrol the roads around the clock, including the morning after, to keep people safe this December. Motorists caught over the limit face at least a year’s driving ban, criminal record and a fine of up to £500
