Mum of woman killed by boyfriend in 'despair' over plans involving Bolton Magistrates
Proposed changes will see many trials moved to other courts across Greater Manchester
The mother of a woman who was killed by her abusive boyfriend has told us she's in 'despair' over controversial plans involving Bolton Magistrates Court.
Proposed changes will see many trials moved to other courts across Greater Manchester.
22-year-old Elinor O'Brien was killed by her boyfriend in Manchester City Centre in August 2022.
In March 2023, Kevin Mannion (22/11/1977) was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 23 years for the murder of Elinor, wounding with intent and controlling and coercive behaviour.
Elinor's mum, Gail Smith, says trials being moved to courts such as Wigan and Manchester is another obstacle being put in the way of witnesses: "With domestic violence witnesses, the temptation and the possibility that they may withdraw at any time for a variety of reasons, is very real, and there all the time.
"It's something else for them to say 'I don't want to do this' because they are fighting a battle every day, living with an abuser."
His Majesty's Courts and Tribunals Service said: “Some trials from Bolton Magistrates’ Court will be dealt with at alternative courts within the Greater Manchester area to help manage workloads and ensure justice is delivered swiftly. The best interests of witnesses are always considered when reviewing the listing of trials.”
