Motorists Hit by Stones thrown off M66 Bridge
Police say those responsible were 'incredibly stupid'.
Police are appealing for information after stones were thrown off a bridge and onto a motorway below.
Shortly after 5:40pm on Tuesday 15 March 2016, police were called to reports that stones were being thrown off the east Lancashire railway bridge over the M66 motorway.
It is believed that a number of cars were damaged including one which had its driver’s side window smashed, leading to the driver having to pull onto the hard shoulder injured.
A 15-year-old boy and three 14-year-old boys have since been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage with intent to endanger life and have been bailed pending further enquiries.
Police Constable Chris Bent of the Heywood and Middleton Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “It goes without saying that throwing stones or items of any kind off a bridge and onto the motorway is an incredibly stupid and dangerous thing to do.
“We would like to appeal to any motorists who were driving on the M66 at the time and have dash footage of the incident or anyone else who may have witnessed it to please contact police.”
