Manchester remembers- Armistice Day in the city centre
Crowds gather at the Manchester cenotaph to pay their respects for armistice day
People of all ages turned out in Manchester city centre today to show their respect for Armistice Day. At 11am the two minutes silence was impeccably observed by young and old who’d gathered at the cenotaph behind Manchester town hall.
Among those attending the remembrance were pupils from Old Trafford Community Academy pictured.
A maroon fired to begin the silence as ex-servicemen and women, past and present were remembered.
Councillor Pat Karney was one of the many who joined a huge crowd paying their respects to those who've been killed in conflicts since 1914.
He noted: “I’m glad that Manchester’s played its part today to recognise the sacrifice that’s been made in the past and currently at the moment.”
In London the widow and the son of murdered Manchester soldier Lee Rigby laid wreaths in Woolwich where his name is engraved on a brass plaque.
