A Manchester man has appeared in court charged with joining Islamic State in Syria.

Mohammed Abdallah, 25, from Westerling Way, Moss Side, allegedly travelled via Libya where he signed up to the terror group in July 2014. He was in possession of an AK47-style weapon in Syria and was sent #2,000 cash, it was alleged.

Abdallah appeared before Westminster Magistrates' Court on Friday charged with possession of a firearm, receiving money for the purpose of terrorism and belonging to a banned organisation.

He indicated not guilty pleas to all the charges.

The defendant appeared in the dock wearing a grey tracksuit and spoke only to confirm his details.

He was arrested last Friday at Heathrow Airport after coming into the UK on a flight from Tunisia.

Abdallah was remanded in custody and ordered to appear on October 7 at the Old Bailey.
