Man taken to safety after almost 24 hours on Stockport Viaduct
British Transport Police have thanked people for their patience
Police negotiators have successfully brought a man to safety, after he spent almost 24 hours on train tracks on Stockport Viaduct.
Officers were first called at 5.30 on Thursday morning, to reports of a person in distress on the bridge.
Specialist officers and paramedics were on the scene to talk to the man.
The incident caused major delays and cancellations to services between Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport.
While travellers trying to get to destinations outside of Greater Manchester also faced long waits, with services to London also impacted.
Normal train services have resumed this morning.
In a tweet, British Transport Police said:
"We would like to thank the public for their support and understanding as we tried to bring the man to safety as quickly as we could."
