A man who was shot while driving with a child in the car remains in a serious condition in hospital.

Greater Manchester Police officers were called to reports of a shooting on Eccles New Road at its junction with Langworthy Road in Salford shortly after 2.40pm on Tuesday.

The victim, in his 30s, was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to his upper torso.

A police spokesman said the man, whose injury is not believed to be life-threatening, was driving when he was shot by a gunman believed to have been on a motorbike.

A child was present in the car at the time but was uninjured, police said.

Superintendent Marcus Noden said: "Our thoughts remain with the victim and the child who was present during this terrible incident.

"It is only by extreme fortune and the swift actions of the emergency services that this shooting didn't prove to be fatal.

"For a child to be witness to this type of incident makes the situation even worse.''

The shooting is being treated as a targeted attack and police do not believe there is any threat to the wider community.
