A man has died after a crash involving a motorbike and car in Wigan.

Emergency services, including the air ambulance, rushed to the scene on Bickershaw Road, Bickershaw, on Wednesday night.

Police say the biker - a 43-year-old man- suffered "significant injuries" and died at the scene.

Officers have now launched an investigation into the collision, and at this stage believe the rider was travelling towards Wigan when a collision took place with a car coming in the opposite direction.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and no arrests have been made.

In an update, GMP said: "Initial enquiries suggest that a motorbike was driving in a westerly direction on Bickershaw Lane, Wigan approaching the junction with Victoria Terrace.

"At the same time, a car has been travelling in an easterly direction along Bickershaw Lane, Wigan. The car slowed to perform a right turn into Victoria Terrace and as the car conducted this manoeuvre, the motorbike collided with the nearside of the car causing the motorbike rider to become unseated from the bike.

"Emergency services attended after the collision but sadly, despite their best efforts, a 43-year-old man, who was riding the motorbike, sustained significant injuries and died at the scene. His family are being supported by officers."

Anyone with information is being asked to contact Greater Manchester Police on 101. DC Carl Boydell, from the force, said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the man who sadly lost his life in this collision. We also thank those who stopped at the scene to help and provide care to the victim.

“We are in the early stages of our investigation and we are asking that anybody who saw the incident or may have captured anything in the locality that may be of interest to us around the time of the collision to come forward and help us understand what occurred.”
