A 59-year-old man has died following a serious crash in Fallowfield on New Year's Day.

At around 3.30am today, police were called to reports of a collision on Yew Tree Road.

Officers rushed to the scene and found a black Mercedes C43 AMG had collided with an oncoming Skoda Octavia.

The driver of the Skoda sadly died at hospital a short time later. His next of kin has been informed and is being supported by specialist officers.

Five other men were taken to hospital – four with serious injuries, one of whom remains in a critical condition.

The road was closed for accident investigation work but has since been reopened.

Inspector Danny Byrne, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This is a tragic incident in which one man died and five others were injured on what should have been a night of celebration – our thoughts are with them and their loved ones as our investigation continues.

“I would like to use this opportunity to ask anyone with information or dash cam footage to contact us as soon as possible.

“We are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who saw the black Mercedes in the area prior to this collision.”
