Children kept indoors whilst armed police are called out in Dukinfield

A Primary school in Dukinfield was placed on lock down this morning following reports of a man acting suspiciously wearing a stab vest and carrying a gun.

Armed police raced to Yew Tree Community Primary at about 8.45am on Friday 3 February 2017.

A 30-year-old man has been detained under the Mental Health Act and was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear or violence.

An extensive search of the surrounding area has been carried out and no trace of any weapon has been found.

There will be increased patrols in the area throughout the day to reassure the community.

Territorial Commander for Tameside, Chief Superintendent Neil Evans, said: “We are currently working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident this morning with the school and local authorities.

“This is a prime example of officers responding quickly and efficiently to community concerns to ensure the safety of the people of Greater Manchester.

“We have negated any threat to the safety of the school or the wider public however, neighbourhood officers will remain in the area throughout the day.

“I’d encourage anyone with any concerns to approach us and I’d like to thank the community for their support as we have carried out our enquiries.”
